Rally Obedience (or ‘Rally O’ as it became more commonly known - although that has been even further ‘reduced’ simply to “RALLY”) is a sport for dogs and their owners/handlers based on obedience. The sport was originally devised some years ago in the US by Charles L ‘Bud’ Kramer, who drew upon the obedience practice of ‘doodling’ – a variety of interesting warm-up and freestyle exercises. Rally rapidly grew in popularity, moving across the border into Canada and more recently crossing the Atlantic into the UK, where it is still a relatively new and fairly unknown sport but becoming more popular - it is the very latest sport to be recognised by the Kennel Club.

In the UK, as in the US and Canada, there are a number of organisations that regulate their own Rally trials – a trial being a series of courses of differing degrees of difficulty. The sport is aimed at all dogs regardless of age, breed, pedigree, size or any disabilities and, in particular, is both a very attractive and competitive activity for pet dogs and their owners. Here at FITdogs we teach and practice “KC Rally”.

Rally involves you and your dog working as a ‘team’ to navigate a course with numbered signs indicating different exercises to perform; think of it as a sort of 'obedience exercise obstacle course'. There is no pause between exercises - you and your dog work briskly through the course without direction from the judge. You are encouraged to talk to and praise your dog during the performance.

Any dog can get involved; your dog does not have to be a pedigree dog to take part, but if you want to compete in KC Rally, it must be registered with the Kennel Club on either the Breed Register or the Activity Register.

In September 2014, Julie Barrett of FITdogs became the very first Kennel Club Accredited Instructor in Rally (KCAI [R]).

KC Rally training sessions are very popular and well supported. Classes include how to approach and undertake each exercise (there are over sixty individual exercises!) both for the dog and the handler!
